Overview

We teach healthcare students and clinicians at all levels and work with educators in many training programs across the University of Washington system. We also engage with national efforts to expand education in primary palliative care.

Serious Illness Communication Program

For UW Internal Medicine residents, CPCCE continues to collaborate on an innovative “Just In Time” training started by Dr. Caroline Hurd during her tenure as Education Director in collaboration with Dr. Amanda Shepherd, Assistant Program Director for the UW Internal Medicine Residency. This is a longitudinal curriculum for internal medicine residents which teaches essential communication skills including delivering serious news, eliciting patients’ goals and values, and debriefing patient deaths with other members of the healthcare team.

The UW Pediatrics Residency includes a course in Mastering Tough Conversations - powered by VitalTalk - during the second or third-year of training. Led by Dr. Amy Trowbridge, Director of Education in Pediatric Palliative Care at Seattle Children’s Hospital, the course involves a 4-hour intensive workshop focused on delivering difficult news for residents rotating at Harborview Medical Center.  Residents then lead subsequent conversations with families to demonstrate mastery.

Primary Palliative Care Curriculum

We have been working with the University of Washington  School of Medicine since 2016 to create a number of educational programs in primary palliative care. We continue to offer a robust 4-week Advanced Patient Care clerkships at the UW Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center, a 2-4 week elective clerkships in pediatrics palliative care at Seattle Children's Hospital, and 2-week elective clerkships in palliative care throughout the five state WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska Montana and Idaho) region.
